Fertile soil is lost on every continent faster than it can be replenished. Solutions are available but reclaiming our depleted farms,
dried up wetlands and all manner of other substandard Earthscapes requires we face the cause of the crisis.
Abundant wildlife and verdant plants could return to a modern world if we were willing to employ a forgotten know-how. Civilization itself may depend on our doing so.
An estimated
75 billion tons of soil are lost annually with more than 80 per cent of the
world's farming land moderately or severely eroded. Our soils have become
depleted of carbon, minerals and a healthy soil microbiology. One University
of Sydney study recently found that
soil loss in China
is 57 times faster than it can be naturally replaced. Soil loss in the United States
is 10 times faster than its replacement rate. Although the soil crisis has
practical solutions, modern agriculture methods must be
fundamentally re-scripted. While current unsustainable practices are difficult
to face, the improper turning of soil by hand or machine has left farm lands vulnerable
to wind and water erosion. The world's soil crisis, with the mounting pressure
of 7 billion people to eat, makes our Earth Regeneration Solutions more urgent
than ever.
The Foundation for Humanity is able to deliver a much needed orchestration of solutions to any farm or region seeking to return its land to vibrant health and production supporting the dream of a thriving sustainable future.
Re-Building
BioDiversity Whatever the condition of a
property, natural cycles can be restored and vibrant health returned. To find
the best way forward, we typically begin by walking the land (looking and
listening.) Understanding how the water cycle is functioning is often the first
step towards a more vibrant land. We use many diverse techniques which mimic
nature's processes. When a land is depleted or barren, w e listen for the reasons. Most
farms and properties have compacted their soil so the Earth no longer breathes
deeply. With compacted soil, rain water takes soil with it as it sweeps the
surface without penetrating the depths.
In earlier times, North America was teaming with beavers building leaky dams while other wild animals burrowed deep into the ground, creating a giant sponge effect in the soil. Beavers could thrive in the dense woods. Beavers created edges, made ponds, knocked down trees, forged channels and slowed down racing water. With fewer trees today, we can't expect to return to the beaver solution but we can mimic their ways. Our Earth Regeneration Solutions invite similar effects with swales and buried logs and brush. We cover our logs with a Magnesium Oxide (MgO)/rock dust mix and then bury them deep into the ground. As the logs decay, the remaining structure invites soil, air and water penetration for generations into the future. We also make spillways mixed with wood chips, soil, minerals and MgO which allow for root entry while limiting erosion.
We create large piles of brush as well and push them deep into the Earth. The effect invites the soil-digging effect of animals and insects to join in. We want earthworms, opossums and foxes digging holes as part of any regeneration solution--in fact, any natural event that can move the dirt to invite more oxygen and water into the soil is welcomed.
Bringing barren ground back to a luscious land involves many diverse and comprehensive techniques. Our toolbox of diversity includes standard engineering practices, Permaculture techniques, soil testing, sustainable and organic agriculture strategies and wildlife management know-how. Experience has taught us to respect the subtle forces of nature as well. For example, we have a dowser on our team who can locate water by pin
pointing its precise depth and flow rate of water employing an ancient skill. He has far more accuracy than a traditional
water map or geological report. Similar to certain health practitioners who
draw on U.S.
homeopathy practices or Chinese acupuncture for effective healing results, we
enhance our land solutions using homeopathy and acupuncture on the land. The
results speak for themselves. As engineers and land development professionals
who desire outstanding regenerative results, we have learned to stay open and
employ what works.
